One of the most exciting contributions to the Newcastle Gateshead Art Fair 2011 will be a striking exhibition by a group of Palestinian artists from Gaza. Their works speak to the themes of resilience and light.

The exhibition will be at Arts Canteen’s stand C37, from Thursday 29 September until Sunday 2 October, where all works will be for sale. All three artists are young emerging talents and demonstrate the strength and resilience of the human spirit in responding to the darkness of conflict.

Shareef Sarhan and Raed Issa contemplate the mundane and find colour, light and a glimpse of the Mediterranean. Mohammed Abusal meditates on light itself, using the traditional Palestinian symbol of resilience in the face of adversity, the cactus.

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light”. Plato

Aser El Saqqa, the founder and director of Arts Canteen, says

“We are excited to be bringing this selection of work to the North East for the first time and that the work of contemporary Arab artists is finally being recognised and celebrated in the UK.”
